My 3-year-old started his day at 3am.
I stepped on a block on my way to calm his frightened heart.
My expletive woke my baby girl up.
And there the three of us were wide-awake just 4 hours after I had fallen asleep.
Yeah, this was not going to be a good day.
I know I’m not the only one out there that can sniff a bad day a mile away, but I was wrong about that day.
While I’m pretty sure a good chunk of that day’s goodness came from a change in heart, I also tried out some of my favorite tricks to turn around a bad day.

There are so many benefits from being in nature. There have even been books written about it.
For kids, it’s the perfect outlet for their energy, creativity, and imagination.
By letting our kids play outside, we are giving them space to explore, space to be a little wild, and hopefully, creating an easier bedtime
Admittedly, with a four-month-old and a three-year-old, this can seem like more work than it’s worth. Instead of being frustrated that right now playing in the backyard leads to a crazier day, we’ve found other ways to make it work.
- Go to the playground
- Take a walk
- Play with the sensory table on the back deck
Regardless of what you do outside, a little fresh air may be all you need to turn your day around.
Do something different
While for us being outdoors is the ultimate 180 for our day, it’s not always feasible. The weather might not be ideal or one of us may be sick or my allergies might be crazy or. . . You get the picture.
On days like that, my introverted self just wants to turn on a movie, read a good book, and chill. I have found that I can get to those calm moments if we first do something different to change up the mood.
- Build a fort
- Bake cookies
Depending on your children’s age, the options are endless. Just choose something that you don’t do very often.
This works if you don’t have children, too! Just skip the distract the kids step and move on to the what rejuvenates your soul!
Bonus Tip: Whatever you choose to do be all there. I’ve noticed that my son struggles the most when I’m not fully present. Turn off distractions and invest in a memory.
Change the physical atmosphere
If you are staying inside, make a few small changes to create a peaceful area.
This may mean doing a quick clean-up to have clutter-free area. I start to majorly stress-out when there is a lot of visual clutter. I have found that a 5 minutes pick-up of whatever room we are planning on being in can completely change my mood and in return, my children’s.
I also like diffuse calming essential oils, especially the Peace & Calming blend with a little bit of orange oil. So good!
If you aren’t home, consider taking a break somewhere that you know will be quiet and visually pleasing.
Listen to Music
Some days we need a pick-me-up, so I will play some fun upbeat tunes. We will have dance parties in the kitchen and laugh like crazies. There’s nothing like some good laughter to turn around a bad day.
Our Favorite Upbeat Albums
- Seeds Family Worship
- Veggie Tales Favorite Sunday School Songs
- Happy Day Everyday – Little Praise Party & Yancy
But other days our house needs some calm and relaxation. I’m a big fan of Hidden in My Heart Lullabies. God’s Word fills our house in the most soothing and comforting ways. We turn off all electronics and quietly play while Truth fills our hearts.
Regardless if you choose music to energize or rest, listen to something that will breathe life into your day.
Out of all of these tips to turn around a bad day, prayer is my number one.
Life can be falling apart, and we can still find rest in God. And God’s peace is beautiful and wonderful and awesome.
And yet, our God is more than a peacemaker.
He’s the creator of the Universe. He’s our Deliverer and Great Physician. He has more power and greatness than we can ever fathom.
So I cry out with my desperate, humbled, surrendered heart to an Almighty God that not only welcomes me but promises me wisdom.
He grants peace in the chaos, and He is in the business of miracles. The same God who rose Jesus to life is still living in you and me, today! Hallelujah!
If you are having a bad day, don’t forget to call on your Savior.
